The SOS Children's Village is located in Surrey, British Columbia, a suburb about 30 km southeast of Vancouver. The site is 10,000 square meters in size and first opened in 1999. The Village consists of five family houses, five basement suites for youth transitioning out of foster care when they turn 19, and a Village Activity Centre. The Village is home to a total of 30 foster children and 5 independent youth living in the basement suites. The Village also includes 5 families living off-site. SOS Children’s Village British Columbia also helps over 80 children through outreach programs in the surrounding community.
SOS Children’s Village British Columbia has a strong focus on Reconciliation with Indigenous Peoples and decolonization of the programs and support they provide to children, youth, and caregivers. The Village works closely with Indigenous communities due to the skewed nature of Indigenous children in the Canadian foster care system. The staff provide trauma-informed care that is based on lifelong engagement and embracing the cultural heritage of each child.
